Pim de Jongh at work in his atelier

Career history:
After his education at the Royal Academy in The Hague (5 year diploma programme) and the School of Graphic Design (3 year programme), Pim de Jongh started to work as a graphic designer for a printing business. While working he also completed a 3 year programme at the "Free Academy" of Visual Art in The Hague. His interests broadened and he moved on to work for the well known international advertising agency - Lintas, where he got acquainted with work in the photo studio. This interested him so much that he attended evening classes at the School for Photographers in Amsterdam and achieved his diploma. He did all the visual work for many large and successful campaigns and soon became the art director for Lintas. After leaving Lintas he started up his own advertising agency. As his interests developed further, he moved on to the field of art - dividing his time between working in a gallery and painting. He now works as a free artist.
About his art:
From the start Pim de Jongh chose to work with acryl paint for both pragmatic and creative reasons. The paint dries faster than oil and mistakes can be corrected as opposed to aquarelle. He was particularly attracted by the fast expressive way of painting which acrylics allowed. His early works were 80x125 - now the formats are larger and 180 x 180 is not exceptional. When planning a new painting - Pim de Jongh makes many small sketches - often tens of them, before picking up a brush.
His early works were mainly figurative, where humour had an important role. He went through a period where he painted women and as his painting developed, so did the shape of his women. At the end of the nineties he deliberately chose another direction for his work. He explains this by - "picture making started to become boring". Pim de Jongh moves on to Lyrical abstraction. Biomorphic, organic figures flow over the canvas and create a surrealistic atmosphere. Space and depth have found their places. The colour intensity is enormous and creates an immense sensation.
The works of Pim de Jongh make one think of Kadinsky, Klee or Miro, but they have their own specific "handwriting" and atmosphere.
